Alec’s BladeXT Story
In 2012, while serving with the Royal Dragoon Guards in Afghanistan, Alec Waters' life took a dramatic turn. He triggered an IED, which resulted in the loss of both his legs. But Alec didn’t let that define him. With the help of his Blatchford Blade XT prosthetics, he's now tackling new challenges, including a personal dream to conquer all 214 Wainwright summits in the Lake District.
Finding the Right Support
Alec’s journey with prosthetics began at Headley Court, where he was introduced to his clinician, Zoe Savage. From the moment they met, Alec knew he was in good hands. "When I met Zoe, I knew I was in good hands. Her calm and professional manner filled me with confidence," Alec recalls. "I can talk to her about all my prosthetic needs, and she listens to me and does her best to make it happen."
That support has been vital as Alec adapted to life with limb loss. Through their collaboration, Zoe helped Alec choose the right prosthetic to match his active lifestyle. “We’ve maintained a great relationship, and I feel comfortable going to her with any questions or issues,” he adds.
A New Lease on Life
Before receiving his Blade XT prosthetics, Alec found doing many things he once loved challenging, mainly walking longer distances and hiking.
“My blades allow me to walk much further and on all terrain. I can pursue my passion for landscape photography and hill walking—these blades have changed my life.”
The Blade XT isn’t just a prosthetic; for Alec, it's become a tool for reclaiming his independence and embracing life. “They’ve given me back a purpose and more confidence," he shares. "That sense of confidence filters through everything I do. My mental and physical health has improved since getting the Blade XTs.”
Climbing New Heights
With renewed mobility, Alec has set his sights on an incredible goal: becoming the first double amputee to complete all 214 Wainwright summits in the Lake District. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but now I believe I can,” Alec says. “The spring return you get from the blades, especially on the uphills, really helps."
This mission isn’t just about Alec’s achievement—he also plans to raise money for the charities that have supported him throughout his recovery. “I want to give back to those who helped me, and this is my way of doing that,” he says with determination.
Life with Blade XT
What stands out in Alec’s story is how these prosthetics have impacted his day-to-day life. They’ve allowed him to return to the activities he loves and given him the confidence to push further. "It’s not just about walking or hiking," he explains. "It’s about feeling like I have a purpose again, and that positively affects everything—from my mental health to how I approach my work and life in general."
Alec’s experience highlights the fundamental, transformative impact that advanced prosthetic technology can have on people’s lives. His story reminds us that no matter the challenges, it’s possible to rediscover independence, confidence, and a new sense of purpose.
“Whatever you’re going through, know it doesn’t have to define your future. With the right support and tools, like the Blade XT, there’s always a way forward.”
