Tectus® Clinic

Our specialist Tectus® Clinic treats patients with partial lower limb paralysis.

Tectus® is a slim and lightweight microprocessor-controlled orthotic device. This pioneering device helps patients walk more naturally, comfortably and safely and represents the next step in intelligent orthotics.

At our Tectus® Clinic, we have a team of specialist orthotists dedicated to helping patients achieve their mobility goals with this industry-leading KAFO (knee-ankle-foot orthosis).

Who is Tectus® for?

Tectus® has been developed for adults but could also be suitable for teenagers. Unlike prosthetics, Tectus® wearers aren’t defined by their activity level. It’s their ability to meet the indications that will determine if the device is suitable for them:

  • Suitable Candidates for Tectus®
    • Quadricep weakness
    • Flaccid paralysis of lower limb
    • Resultant paralysis from orthopaedic injury or procedure
    • Insufficient knee control
    • Spinal injuries
    • Stroke wearers (mild tone only)
    • Poliomyelitis
    • Patient can initiate swing phase from their hip
    • Hip flexion power 2+ (Oxford scale)
    • The wearer can stand independently
    • Minimum user weight 50kg
    • Maximum user weight including carrying weight 100kg

    *Every wearer will require evaluation by a Tectus® approved orthotist.

  • Unsuitable Candidates for Tectus®
    • Unable to initiate hip flexion to initiate swing phase from muscle power or with compensatory movements
    • Knee or hip flexion contracture greater than 10 degrees
    • 10 plus degrees genu varus or valgus that can’t be reduced
    • Significant muscle tone/spasticity (mild can be managed)
    • Compromised trunk contro
    • A leg length discrepancy more than 15 cm
    • Muscle conditions that prevent control of an orthosis including moderate or severe spasticity
    • Lack of sensory or cognitive ability necessary to operate and perceive device controls and indicators respectively

Treatment Process

Assessment

 

We will conduct an initial screening over the phone and/or by video to observe your mobility.

 

This will be followed with an in-clinic assessment and if you are a suitable candidate, you will be invited back for the next stage in the process.

Physiotherapy

 

We will often recommend to start physiotherapy six weeks prior to having the brace fitted. This will allow work on any tight muscles and ensure you are in the best possible condition for using Tectus®.

Measurement

You will be invited into clinic and offered a trial with a Tectus® evaluation brace to ensure Tectus® is a suitable option for you. We will take a cast to produce a ‘Check Fit’ KAFO. The Check Fit KAFO is used to finalise the measurements before the we produce the full Tectus® KAFO.

Supply & Fit

 

You will receive your final carbon KAFO and the Tectus® device will be programmed for you by one of our expert team.

Gait Training and Physiotherapy


You will receive training and physiotherapy to optimise your performance and experience with Tectus®. We recommend subsequent physiotherapy sessions to continue your progress and experience with the brace.

Aftercare


Your Orthotist will see you at agreed intervals to provide clinical care and check the Tectus® brace.
