Lower Limb Prosthetic Guidance for Caregivers
As a caregiver of a person with lower limb amputation, you understand that there is no way to measure the physical and mental strain brought on by their loss. You are aware of the difference that mobility can mean in someone’s life.

Where Do You Start?
This new way of living may seem overwhelming for you and the amputee, but we are here to help caregivers get started. The following steps may be helpful:
1.) The rehabilitation journey should start BEFORE the amputation. Find out where the rehabilitation will be located and call to ask to meet the team before the surgery. Ask for exercises for the patient before the surgery. Get to know the rehabilitation team and prepare yourself for spending a regular amount of time with that rehab facility after surgery.
2.) Have a conversation with the prosthetist about Blatchford’s available lower limb prosthetics to find the right device for the patient. There are many options available, depending on the patient’s activity level. Find the K-Level for the patient here.
3.) Reach out to the amputee community for advice and guidance. Facebook groups can be a great resource, as well as Blatchford’s Ambassadors of Mobility, (Blatchford volunteers whose mission is to help others who have also experienced lower limb loss).
4.) Ask the prosthetist about amputee support groups and therapists that specialise in limb loss counselling and therapy.
5.) Do NOT let the amputee skip physical therapy appointments unless they are ill and contagious. Not going to PT on a regular basis will delay the healing process.
