Joe McCarthy
Blatchford Senior Consultant Prosthetist
Joe McCarthy has been the Senior Consultant Prosthetist with Blatchford for over 20 years. In this role Joe is a practicing clinician and plays a significant role in guiding product design.
Starting his career as an apprentice and progressing to become a qualified clinician in the 1980s Joe has consistently been at the top of his profession. In 1995 he was awarded Prosthetist of Year award by the Limbless Association.
Joe practiced as prosthetist and managed numerous clinics across the UK gaining broad experience in all levels of amputation and hardware provision. This led to his appointment at Blatchford in 1996. His role is divided between clinical delivery, and research and development activities. Joe’s clinical experience includes working with veteran amputees at the world renown facility at Headley Court in the UK.
Since joining Blatchford Joe has been heavily involved in all product development from the first commercially available hydraulic ankles, through integrated microprocessor systems to perforated silicone liners. Joe was a key to the team that developed award winning products including the Linx, (the world’s first fully integrated limb system), and the Elan ankle, (with biomimetic hydraulic technology).
Working internationally, Joe has developed a significant breadth of understanding of patient needs from a wide range of diverse cultures and backgrounds. And he has been instrumental in guiding product design to addresses the needs of our global customers and patients.
Joe leads the clinical contribution to product development and extending our understanding superior clinical outcomes through his clinical practice, working with our product ambassadors in the evaluation and understanding of scientific evidence.
